Episode 17: A Hundred Years of P&O (Part 2)
In this second 59-min video titled "A Hundred Years Of P&O" we continue our travel through time, starting at the end of World War II to the present day. We look at how the company recovered from its almost disastrous war losses and created one of the most modern and impressive fleets of passenger and cargo ships the world has ever seen. This rare archive film, most of which has never been made public before, allows us to witness the introduction of such great ships as the Cushan, Iberia, Himalaya and Arcadia to rival the threat of Orient Lines magnificient Oronsay, Orsova and Orcades. This is followed by more carefully restored film showing the building and launching of two of the world's greatest passenger liners, the Oriana and the Canberra, these were the biggest and fastest liners ever to be introduced to the Australasian service. We follow their illustrious careers as they set new standards for long distance line voyages and, later on cruising. |
